What Are The Disadvantages Of Natural Gas
Natural gas best answers our need in today’s time of higher fuel consumption and increasing gas prices. It is the cleanest and an efficient fuel compared to crude oil. However, there is a flip side to this story as well. Natural Gas is not the answer to ALL our prayers. |

Some disadvantages of using natural gas are:
- It requires more space for storage than gasoline does. Besides, it needs to be compressed at high pressure to accommodate the gas in a normal size tank. Therefore, a bigger tank is needed. This increases the bulk of the vehicle.
- There aren’t many gas stations that offer refilling services for natural gas. The vehicles running on them require more gas to run efficiently between fill-ups.
- The most important thing to remember for people using NGVs is that natural gas is very volatile in nature. Hence even a small leak is enough to cause a high scale explosion. Normally a very strong smelling substance is added in the gas so that even a drip of the gas becomes obvious.
- Its requirement of large storage spaces makes natural gas highly difficult to be shipped from one place to another. As a result the demand for natural gas is not evenly met worldwide. However, a recent option is to build large refrigerated ships that have in built mechanism to cool and compress natural gas into LNG or liquefied Natural Gas. But these ships are very expensive to construct.
So while environmentalists are singing paeans of natural gas, let’s not forget that everything comes at a price!
