Crude Oil Product Loss During Refining Stages
Once crude oil is extracted from oil fields, it is not sold directly in the markets for consumption. Sending it to an oil refinery is very important because oil in its crude form is highly unstable. The reason is that in its natural form it contains several minerals and elements. |

For this purpose the extracted oil is taken to refineries. In a refinery a crude oil goes through a lot of stages before being utilized to run cars or generate heat in homes. The three main stages involved in oil production are; separation, transformation and up gradation. The process involves getting the lightest and the heaviest products from crude. The heaviest particles settle at the bottom of the refinery machine, while the lightest float on the top.
Many refineries stop the process here. However, the heavy residue left at bottom is equally rich in minerals. If subjected to another distillation process, diesel along with other fuel oils can be recovered. The market is ripe for lighter fuels. Hence, fuels with heavy particles can be further broken down into smaller pieces. This is a very vigorous treatment but the advantage from doing this comes in the form of gas, petrol and diesel. All the heavy molecules can be turned into smaller, lighter ones. But many companies are reluctant to do so. The reason is that technique involves lot of energy use. This turns it into a very expensive process.
