In a refinery the oil undergoes different stages to bring out various minerals and elements from it. Primary aim is to get the lighter minerals present in crude. The reason is that the market demand is more for lighter fuels than heavier. In this process the lighter minerals float on the top and the heavier settle down at the bottom as residue. The residue can also be processed and broken down into simpler molecules. However, since this requires a lot of energy output, not many companies venture into it. This results in loss of lot of useful minerals during the refining stages of crude oil.
Recently the world has seen an increase in demand for crude oil and its products. This is mainly because the rapidly growing working class across the world, especially in India and China, is fast becoming its consumers. But the oil companies are unable to meet this surging demand mainly because of the depleting resources. Some blame also lies on the political unrest in the Middle East. This region is a rich reservoir of crude oil. All these factors have contributed in zoom of oil prices across all markets.
