When buying a diesel car check and compare four main things:
- Efficiency: Check for compression ratio and the temperature at which the engine burns fuel. The greater the ratio and higher the temperature, the better the car will perform.
- Maintenance: The engine vibration should not be higher, since that is likely to cause the engine to erode. Go for a car that gives you minimum engine pulsation. Turbo charger feature is a recent addition in diesel cars that is likely to help get rid of vibrations.
- Reliability: Ensure that your diesel engine does start in the winter. Although it may take a little longer than the petrol version. However, remember that it does start and only causes trouble in winters when temperatures are low. If you face the same problem in summers as well as monsoons, you haven’t done your research well!
- Price and mileage: go for the car that gives you the best mileage within city and on highway. But take care that it does not burn a hole in your pocket. Remember, diesel cars are not as expensive as petrol cars. If your dealer does not agree with this, search for another.
