The term solar energy availability means the converted energy and its usage. How much energy is available to use after the solar energy has been converted is measured. The sun is shining for most of the day. A lot of sun's energy gets absorbed in the atmosphere, but earth also absorbs a considerable amount of it. On a scale of comparison, more sunlight is absorbed by the earth in just one hour than all the human beings use in one day.
The sun is available only in the day time and this is called availability hours for solar energy. However, the North Pole and South Pole have extended hours of sunlight. There are solar power equipment which absorb excess solar energy and store it for later use when the sun is not available. Even this is factored in to the availability. So typically the solar energy systems keep conserving the power during day time and also allow the system to use direct light for its functioning during the day time. In the night time, the reserved solar energy is used. Back up solar energy has to be there because the weather could change suddenly and the rains could dampen the solar energy systems. Also, clouds can block the sunlight from reaching the earth.
