Nuclear weapons have been in testing and experimenting stage since 1945, the year of the end of Second World War. In 1963, both nuclear and non-nuclear countries signed a pact to not carry out nuclear explosion tests in atmosphere, under the water or in space. But underground tests were given the go ahead. As a result, history is rich with stories of testing of nuclear weapons. Apart from the atomic bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, all other nuclear bombings have thankfully only been in the name of conducting experiments.

In 1945, the USA carried out two nuclear bombing tests before finally dropping the atomic bomb in Japan. The USSR carried out the first fission explosion in 1949. The UK followed suit in 1952. The same year the USA staged a thermonuclear weapon test. In August 1953, the USSR tested the first nuclear fusion weapon. Following year, the USA staged a thermonuclear weapon power display. This resulted in fallout that caused death of one due to exposure to radiation. The UK followed in the footsteps of the USA in 1957. They were successful in their testing of thermonuclear weapon. France had its first fission test in 1960. In 1961, the USSR exploded the largest thermonuclear weapon ever to be invented. Republic of China had its first fission blast in 1964. In 1974, India successfully conducted its first nuclear fission explosion. India again carried out two nuclear power explosions in 1998. Pakistan also had its first fission test in 1998. Korea tested its fission weapon in the year 2006.
