Advantages And Disadvantages Of Nuclear Power

Nuclear power is nuclear energy generated from a nuclear technology that gathers energy from the nuclei of atoms under controlled nuclear reactions. This can be achieved using the process of nuclear fission, nuclear fusion of radioactivity.

Use of nuclear power is a debatable topic especially because of the recent developments that have resulted in the misuse of nuclear energy produced. Let us take a look at the pros and cons of nuclear power.

Advantages of nuclear power

  1. The power plants required for the production of nuclear power, do not take a lot of space for construction.
  2. Nuclear power plants do not pollute. They give out very little waste.
  3. There is limited supply of coal and gas left. In their absence, nuclear power can take over the role of producing electricity.
  4. It is the most concentrated form of energy and is therefore reliable.
  5. Nuclear power is not very expensive to produce. Its cost is similar to that coal.
  6. Nuclear power does not give out gases like CO2. Hence it does not contribute to global warming.
  7. Large amounts of energy can be produced from lesser quantity of fuel.

Disadvantages of nuclear power

  1. It causes nuclear explosions. These explosions emit radiations that have both immediate and long-term effect on living beings.
  2. Nuclear reactors do not have a long life. They work only until fifty years maximum.
  3. If the reaction in a nuclear reactor goes haywire, it can lead to a meltdown. This meltdown releases harmful radiations n to the atmosphere.
  4. Requires lot of money to be spent to ensure the safety standards of a nuclear reactor.
  5. Though reactors produce little waste, yet it is hard to be gotten rid of. This is mainly because nuclear waste is radio active in nature and can cause serious health hazards if humans are exposed to it.
