Methanol: Safe handling and storage
- Care should be taken to ensure that there are proper guidelines available to one and all dealing with the production and storage of methanol.
- Tanks, pipes and hoses that are involved in the transport of methanol should be labeled neatly and clearly.
- Vessels used to keep methanol should be made from mild steel. These containers must be designed keeping in mind the safety regulations.
- Proper ventilation system needs to be in place where methanol is kept. This is necessary in case of fire and leaks.
- Ensure that all the equipments used for dealing with methanol are methanol friendly. Any metal or chemical that does not suit methanol well is likely to be dangerous.
- Control devices be included in storage tanks.
- Carbide tipped clamps be used in the transport used for taking methanol from one place to another. These should also be a part of the containers.
- Dip tub fillings should be used in order to nullify static electricity.
- Any material that is non-ferrous in nature must not be used as part of the container or storage device.
- Methanol vapors escaping from the vessels ought to be controlled with pressure relief valves or vacuum breakers. Even inert gases like dry nitrogen can be used for the purpose. Another method is to paint the containers in white. This will also reduce the vaporization of methanol.
- The vessels and containers used for storing and transporting methanol must be cleaned properly and regularly to avoid contamination. The place of storage must have only authorized access to it.
