Types Of Fossil Fuels
Fossil fuels are formed in the earth's crust for a millions of years. They are formed from decaying vegetation and animals, and various other organisms. Fossil fuels provide the main source of energy to the world that we live in today. We need electricity and petrol or oil to run our lives. These are extracted and produced out of fossil fuels. |

There are 3 main types of fossil fuels -- coal, oil and natural gas. All the three are available several feet below the earth. They have to be mined and taken out.
Oil is the main source of fuel, and diesel, petrol, jet oil and any other types of oil used to fuel automobiles and vehicles is an extract from the crude oil. Crude oil is mined out from oil wells and then refined for various purposes. More than 90 percent of the vehicles run on petrol and other forms of oil. So it is the main source of transport and energy also. Oil is used in several other energy producing plants.
Coal is found in the form of rocks under the earth. Coal is found abundantly in the earth's crust. Nearly 50 percent of the world’s consumption of electricity comes from coal. We burn coal so that we can generate electricity.
Natural gas is found wherever oil is found. It is extremely combustible in nature. Natural gas is also extracted using pipe lines and is mainly made up of methane. Methane is present even in the air. However, in the earth’s crust it is mainly due to petrol and coal.
