The current day fossil fuels like oil and coal that we use have formed since millions of years from organic material of prehistoric animals and plants. However, today, fossil fuels drive the world by providing us with electricity, energy and petrol. Also, at the same time they are depleting at a rapid rate. The consumption of fossil fuels by mankind has increased by several times since the early 19th century. After the industrial revolution and automobile industry boom, there has been a tremendous increase in the usage of oil and coal.

There are more advantages of fossil fuels. Oil for example is very essential in almost all the industries. They power vehicles and several machines. Coal is needed to generate electricity and today the bulk of electricity is produced from coal rather than nuclear energy, wind power or hydro electricity. Fossil fuels can be collected in large amounts and stored. No other form of energy can be stored like the way fossil fuels can be.

The disadvantage of using fossil fuel is it is extremely polluting and also damages the environment. They will be depleted one day and human beings will have no source of power and energy. Fossil fuels cannot be replaced as they have to form on their own.
