  • More ethanol was produced in the year 2007. This is evident from the statistics that show corn planted last year increased by 575 million bushels. Corn used for making ethanol was 18% more than 2006; more by almost 14.6%.
  • Storage areas for corn have seen an increase. This is largely because ethanol demand has become more worldwide.
  • Midwest Farmers Cooperative has build 2.3 million bushels of storage space for corn. This is the largest granary built in the past 15 years.

  • Ethanol is a carcinogen.
  • It is not possible to ship ethanol using pipelines. This is because ethanol shows a great affinity for water.
  • Ethanol corrodes the engine causing leakage of fuel. It reacts with oxides present in the engine and dissolves them.
  • Pure ethanol leak or ethanol blended with gasoline leak, results in benzene plumes. These are 150% more than what a non-ethanol fuel would have caused.
  • Ethanol is a high octane fuel. Hence the engine performance is better.
  • It is a renewable fuel and helps lessen green house gases emission from vehicles.
  • Using ethanol has proved to be cost effective. Individuals can save money and governments can save on importing costly fossil fuels.
