Countries across the world are adopting CNG to run their vehicles. America is no different. This is the country that consumes the largest amount of gasoline, annually. Demand for crude oil is also very high here. In the USA, federal tax credits are made available to buy a new CNG vehicle. Though natural gas prices are at a high, CNG is being sold 30-60% less than gasoline. In the state of Utah, filling stations offer a subsidy of $0.85/gge.
CNG has come under national scrutiny mainly because the oil prices have gone up. Hence it is no surprise that with increasing fuel prices, Americans are now turning towards CNG as alternative fuel for their vehicles. People are recognizing the need for making a switch to natural gas. The question remains how easy is it going to be. Government feels that technology isn’t an issue here. General Motors already has 18 models in the market that run on CNG. None of these models are being sold in the US though. As of now, only Honda Civic GX sedan is manufacturing CNG engines in the US. This vehicle has limited distribution in a few select states across America. However, since its launch in 1997, the vehicle has been enjoying the status of greenest car in the country. A proposal, referred to as the Pickens Plan, wants to expand the network of CNG vehicles all over the US. Congress is working on a bill that will make it mandatory for at least 10% vehicles in Detroit to run on CNG by 2018.
