What-Plants-Are-Used-To-Make-Biofuel      As we all know, biodiesels are in great demand across the world. People’s need for crude oil is not being met sufficiently. Hence more and more are looking at alternative fuels to run their daily lives smoothly. Whatever little oil is available is being sold at a high price. This has not left us with many choices except to switch over to another effective fuel to fulfill our demand. More..

What Is Biofuel Made From

Technology has made it possible to produce biofuel from any given material; be it biomass or waste products. There are plenty of biofuels available in the market today. They have their advantages and disadvantages. Hence all need to be worked upon in their present state to convert them into effective fuels.

  • Bioethanol is produced from fermentation of sugar into ethanol. The process is very similar to beer and wine-making.
  • Biohydrogen is manufactured using biomass feedstock. Method involves gasification of biomass. The resulting methane undergoes reforming. Alternatively, biohydrogen can also be produced directly from some organisms that release hydrogen in a created environment. This fuel is useful in producing electricity with the help of fuel cells.
  • Biomethanol is similar to methanol. However, it is derived from biomass. A blend of biomethanol with 10-20% petrol does not even require any modifications in the engine.
  • WVO or waste vegetable oil is also used to process biofuel. All it requires is pre heating to get rid of its highly viscous nature. Once water and any waste particulates are removed, the oil is fit to be used as fuel.
  • Biodiesel is derived from vegetable and animal fats. The process used is called transesterification. The oils along with sodium hydroxide and methanol/ethanol react chemically. This results in production of biodiesel.
  • Biogas is made from biodegradable waste material. The procedure involves anaerobic digestion of this material by anaerobes. The resulting byproduct can be used a fuel or as a fertilizer.
  • Algae fuel, also called oilgae, is a biofuel derived from algae. Algae are culturally grown in abundant carbon dioxide. The biofuel that is produced is biodegradable and hence harmless. Oilgae is a third generation biofuel.
  • Wood diesel is a relatively new type of biofuel. It has been developed from wood chips. The extracted oil is suitable for use in engines that have not been modified. Production of wood diesel also gives charcoal as a by product. This charcoal is used as a fertilizer in soil.
