Benzene is an organic chemical that is used in manufacturing of several other chemicals and products that we use everyday. It is an extremely useful industrial chemical. Benzene can be found in all compounds that are derived from nature. It is mostly found in fossil fuels. Benzene seeps into the environment as a result of volcanic eruptions and forest fires. It is the main ingredient in oil and coal. Whenever coal is burnt, benzene is a residue that forms. Also, when fuel is burnt, benzene becomes the residual product. It is also one of the gases that contribute to air pollution. Benzene is present in higher quantities in areas where industries using benzene are located.
When we use everyday housecleaning products like soaps, paint supplies, adhesives and glue or toilet cleaners, benzene is released into the environment. However, it is always a byproduct and is not one of the natural chemicals or gases found in the air.
Benzene is colorless in nature and has a sweet aromatic smell. When it is released into the air it travels into the water by seeping in through the soil. Also, when benzene comes in contact with rain, it gets absorbed into the soil. People actually are exposed to low levels of benzene in their everyday lives. However, those who live in industrial areas are prone to severe exposure.
