Fugitive-Emissions-For-Benzene      An oil refinery releases toxic gases in the earth’s atmosphere. When this refinery is not under an authorized control, the air pollution emissions that it causes are referred to as ‘fugitive’ emissions. There are stacks of pipe laying around that help move the partially finished product. These pipes allow gases to escape into the atmosphere through vents in them. More..

Exposure to benzene can lead to serious health problems. It is present in low amounts even in the air around us. This benzene comes from exhaust emissions of vehicles, by smoking tobacco, industrial gases, transfer of gasoline and service stations for automobiles. Paints, detergents, furniture wax and glues also release vapors of benzene in the air. These products have been modified to a large extent and are relatively safe to use now. But the air around the gas and service stations is emitting even larger quantities of benzene than ever before.

Benzene can cause death if high proportion of it is inhaled for even a very small duration. Exposure to low level of benzene can lead to drowsiness, headache, tremors, unconsciousness and increased heart rate. If consumed accidently via food or water, dizziness, sleepiness, spasms, vomiting and inflammation of the stomach, are the typical symptoms of benzene poisoning. Benzene mainly affects the blood. It weakens the bone marrow, decreasing the red blood cells count. This results in anemia. Lowering of blood cells can also lead to excessive bleeding. Chances of infection are greatly increased when this happens. It can also cause leukemia and other types of blood cancers.

Benzene poses serious health threats to the mankind. It effects the proper functioning of brain, heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. It also damages the DNA strands causing changes in the genetic make-up. Women, exposed to benzene have reportedly had fertility issues. What is not known is whether benzene is detrimental to the growth of fetus.  Not only humans, but also animals are susceptible to its harmful affects. Soil with benzene mixture can cause retarded growth in plants as well. In 2006, some brands of soft drinks were found to contain more than the level of permitted benzene.
