Why Do Desktop Computers Have Batteries ?
Most people will be surprised to know that even their desktop computers have batteries. The battery is required for powering up a chip called Real Time Clock. Battery does not power the computer itself, but it keeps the computer clock ticking. This real time clock is nothing but a regular quartz watch that keeps running inside the computer even when it is switched off. This is why the desktop computer or even the laptop ends up showing accurate time when you switch on the computer. When the computer boots, it is an essential thing for the clock to show the right time and the date. |

A small clock runs for approximately 5 to 7 years. However, when the clock dies, the computer may not boot. So when you have problems with your computer not starting, it is always a good idea to check the clock. You may think that even if the clock does not work, the computer should start up and show a wrong time like when a watch stops, for example. The reason why the computer does not start is because this particular battery also contains a small 64 bit memory. While the clock on the battery takes up only 10 bits of memory, there are other programs vital for the starting of the computer run on the remaining part of the battery’s memory and that is why the computer refuses to start.
That is why it is extremely essential that we keep tabs on the functioning of the computer battery and change it once in five years to be safe.
