How Do I Clean Up After An Alkaline Battery Leak ?s
Alkaline battery leaks are very common, and it often happens. When you see a battery that has leaked, it will have a dark brown smelly liquid coming out of it from one end. It looks like gunk that has collected outside the battery. The battery has gel based content inside to generate the power. When it leaks, the gel based content comes out. Since potassium hydroxide is actually a base you will need to use an acid to clean it. The potassium hydroxide is usually thick and smelly. |

A battery is an electronic aid, and while you are cleaning it, do not keep water near you or have wet hands. You can become a conductor for electricity. Take care of the safety essentials. Also, while dealing with acid it is better to wear gloves. Keep tools like a tooth brush or paint brush beside you to clean.
To make the cleaning acid, take some lime and vinegar solution. This particular combination should be acidic in nature. Soak the tip of the brush in this acid and gently clear out the brown or the grey gunk that has collected on the battery or the equipment. Use only a small part of solution at a time and do not use excess of it. It may get into the device and spoil it still further.
In the beginning it may appear that the gunk is too hard to get rid off. However, have patience as it takes time for the base to react with the acid and come off. Keep removing the gunk with gentle strokes. Keep a cloth handy if you need.
