Alkaline batteries pollute the environment and intake of alkaline gases is hazardous to health. Majority of the electronic products that we know of, including toys and small appliances, run on alkaline batteries. These batteries use potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide to produce the required current. They contain a gel like substance inside. When we come in contact with this gel it can burn tissues, and also penetrate into the body cells. |

They have several detrimental effects on human and animal bodies. The small disc batteries are not only choking hazards, but are also harmful for the body. There are different types of alkaline batteries using various kinds of alkaline materials. All of them are bad for health. A small single battery may not be harmful on a day to day basis. However, constant exposure to it may even cause cancer.
The hazards of alkaline batteries also cause foreign body obstruction. This particular syndrome has several side effects which include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and anorexia on severe exposure. If one inhales the gases from battery exposure, it can cause dyspnea (shortness of breath) and cyanosis. The gases have the capacity to burn the tissues that come in contact with it like the nasal tissues and even the esophagus. People who are prone to such disorders may be working in an alkaline plant, battery making companies, and also who live closer to such plants.
The chemicals and the residues can cause several more disorders. Some of the household chemicals are also alkaline in nature. Children should never be allowed to play with alkaline batteries.
