There are plenty of natural resources that are available to us for use. But very few can be utilized in their natural form. One such natural energy is wind. Let’s make an attempt to study wind as a fuel of future. The advantages of using wind powered energy are:

  1. It doesn’t cost anything and is available in plenty. All it requires is, to be converted into energy efficiently.
  2. Wind is absolutely harmless. It causes no pollution and does not produce any toxic gases.
  3. Wind turbines don’t require much effort to be built. They also occupy small space.
  4. The turbines are easy to move around.
  5. The turbines are available in all sizes. This makes them easy to transport. Also, every house/industry can opt for a size depending on the requirement.
  6. They are much quieter than generator or electricity pumps.
  7. Maintenance of wind turbines machines is easy and does not cost much.

But like every other natural resource, wind energy is not without its disadvantages. Some side effects of using it are:

  1. Wind turbines, especially the older models, can be a major source of noise pollution in the area.
  2. Constant flow of wind is needed at all times to generate adequate electricity.
  3. The sharp blades pose threat to birds flying at that level. Many are instantly killed.
  4. Making a wind turbine does lead to some amount of pollution. Hence, many do not consider them pollution free.
  5. In order to run industries, a sizeable amount of wind turbines need to be constructed. This requires land, which does not come free.
  6. Naturalists feel that wind turbines stand out like sore thumb in an otherwise beautiful landscape.
  7. Wind farms need to be constructed at large levels. Only then can demand of big industries be met. The largest turbine can provide electricity to about 475 homes. That does not even cover one neighborhood in a small town.
